Louis Stratz's parents were immigrants from Germany. His father was a renowned jeweller and watchmaker in Perth, and donated the 300lb bell in St John's, which rang out for the first time for Midnight Mass in 1886. It was blessed by Bishop Rigg on the feast of the Immaculate Conception that year, almost three years after Louis's death.
