(Archdiocese of Glasgow) Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 30th January 1853; recalled by Archbishop Eyre, 25th July 1876, sent to Partickhill, and ordained a priest by Bishop McLachlan in St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Glasgow, 4th May 1879; nominated Bishop of Galloway, 22nd April 1914, and consecrated by Archbishop Mackintosh (Chersona), 9th June 1914; died in Dumfries, 24th December 1943.

The Rev. James McCarthy was born at Newcastle-on-Tyne on the 30th January, 1853; entered Blairs College on the 15th September, 1869; and was sent to the Scots College, Valladolid, in May, 1872. In August, 1876, he was transferred to St. Peter’s Seminary, Partickhill. He received Minor Orders from Archbishop Eyre in December, 1876, and was ordained by him Sub-Deacon on the 21st December, 1878, and Deacon on the 19th March, 1879. He was ordained Priest by Bishop McLachlan in St. Andrew’s Pro-Cathedral, Glasgow, on the 4th May, 1879, and appointed junior Priest at Our Lady and St. Margaret’s, Glasgow.
